About Us

The mission of SEI-MD is to serve the Maryland structural engineering community and encourage professional and community service. We organize technical presentations, field trips, continuing education courses, and networking events. SEI-MD is a local chapter of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute and we operate under the ASCE Maryland Section.The SEI Chapter is served by the following elected board of directors:


President - Nicole Baer, P.E.


Nicole has been involved with the organization in some capacity since its inception in 2004.  She served as the newsletter editor, Secretary, and activities coordinator for SEI-MD, and she represented the Maryland Chapter at the Structural Technical Group Chair’s meeting in 2007 and 2010.  Nicole earned a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree from the Pennsylvania State University.  She is currently an Associate and Project Manager in the Building Structures Group at KCI Technologies, Inc., and she has approximately 10 years of structural engineering experience.


Vice President - Lisa Anderson, P.E.


 Lisa Anderson works as a Senior Structural Engineer with Bechtel National, Inc.  Lisa earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Structural and Earthquake Engineering from the University at Buffalo.  Lisa is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Civil Engineers, and American Institute of Steel Construction.  She has previously served as the SEI-MD treasurer and the Secretary and Vice President of the CRSV Branch of the ASCE.  Lisa serves as the Secretary of the ACI 349 Code Committee – “Code Requirements for Nuclear Safety-Related Concrete Structures”.  Lisa is a registered Civil Engineer in the State of California and a LEED Accredited Professional.


 Secretary - Steve Fung, P.E.


Steve Fung is an Associate and Project Manager in the Geo-Structural department at Schnabel Engineering Consultants, Inc.  Steve has over 13 years of geo-structural design experience.  He has earned his Bachelor of Engineering Degree with a focus on Structural Engineering from the University of Guyana and a Master of Engineering Degree from Johns Hopkins University.  He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland and New York.


Treasurer - Ryan Smith, P.E.


Ryan Smith is an Associate and Project Engineer at Vannoy & Associates, LLC in Silver Spring, MD.  He has over 10 years experience in forensic investigations, structural design, and structural condition assessments.  Ryan has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and a Master of Science degree in structural engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.  He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. 


Past President - Cyndi Smith, P.E.


Cyndi is a senior associate and project manager in the Facilities Department of Johnson Mirmiran and Thompson.  She has over 12 years of structural engineering experience related to building structural design.  She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering from Drexel University and a Master of Science degree in Technical Management from Johns Hopkins University.  Cyndi is the current President of SEI-MD.  In the past she has served as Vice-President and as a Committee Chair.  She has been the delegate for the Structural Technical Group Chair’s meeting for ASCE/SEI for three years, and she is serving a four year term on the National SEI Local Activities Division Board.  She is a member of ASCE and SEI, and was selected as the ASCE-MD Young Civil Engineer of the Year for 2010.
