You are invited to attend the AISC T.R. Higgins Award Lecture Series brought to you by the Structural Engineering Institute, Maryland Chapter. On Wednesday, December 7, Charles Roeder, PhD, P.E., will present:
“Braced Frame Gusset Plate Connection Design”
Abstract:
Current special concentrically braced frame (SCBF) design provisions attempt to ensure good inelastic performance by controlling the brace slenderness and connection geometry and by providing adequate connection resistance, but this approach is flawed. A research study was completed to develop improved models for SCBF gusset plate connection design. More than 35 full scale SCBF systems were experimentally evaluated, and numerous nonlinear analyses were completed. A proposed design procedure has been developed, which balances desirable yield mechanisms in the brace and connection and restricts undesirable failure modes. This work is summarized, and gusset plate connection design recommendations are presented.
Speaker:
This technical seminar is brought to you as part of the AISC T.R. Higgins Award Lecture Series. The presenter is the 2011 T.R. Higgins Award Winner, Charles Roeder, PhD, P.E. , professor of civil engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Roeder is being honored for his paper on Gusset Plate Connections for Seismic Design, and he has authored more than 75 journal articles and numerous other reports and publications. He was a participant in the preparation of the FEMA Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings, and he was co-author of the AASHTO Specifications for the design of bridge bearings. His research focuses on the seismic performance of bridges and of steel and composite buildings.
